About the talk
On the 5th September 2011, aged 23, Alexandra Elbakyan created a PHP script that downloaded articles for free to make them open access to all. That script came to be known as Sci-Hub, “the first pirate website in the world to provide mass and public access to tens of millions of research papers” (more information here). Now, in its 10th year, Sci-Hub has become one of – if not the – most popular means to access academic literature hidden behind a paywall. Sci-Hub’s creator will join us to talk about the origin of Sci-Hub, where it is now, and what the future holds. The talk will be composed of a 25 minute pre-recorded talk followed by a live Q&A.
